Why should logistics service
providers know about purchasing
and supply management?
Logistics service providers need to know about and understand the purchasing and supply
management of their own organisations and of their client organisations. Dr Beverley Waugh
and Dr Myles Wakeham explore the critical relationship between buyers and sellers.

suppliers impacts the quality of their
goods and services. Aspects such as
the purchasing and even outsourcing
of logistics services includes the
relationships between these buyers
and sellers, thus playing an important
role in organisational success.
Understanding the different roles
and tasks of the purchasing and supply
functions within organisations is critical.
It is also important that other functions,
such as logistics, understand these
speciic purchasing tasks, whether
they be the logistics department of a
manufacturer or exporter for example,
or a logistics service provider that
needs to understand their clients and
the speciic tasks that their clients’
supply teams go through in selecting
or NOT selecting them as the provider
of the procured services.
